Art and collectables auctions sell paintings, sculpture, antiques, furniture, jewellery, coins, stamps and memorabilia. South African auction houses publish illustrated catalogues with estimates, and most now accept online and absentee bids.
Read the condition report, ask about provenance for important pieces, and note that the buyer's premium at art auctions is often higher than at general sales. Check how and when you can collect, and whether the auctioneer can arrange packing and shipping.

Buying at art and collectables auctions
What is an estimate at an art auction?
It is the auctioneer's opinion of the likely selling range. Lots can sell above or below it, and a reserve (the minimum the seller will accept) is usually confidential.
Can I ask for a condition report?
Yes. Most art and antiques auctioneers will send a condition report and extra photos on request, which is especially useful if you are bidding online.
How does absentee bidding work?
You leave a maximum bid with the auctioneer before the sale. They bid on your behalf up to that amount, and you pay only what is needed to win the lot.
