How to Buy at an Online Auction in South Africa

By The BidAll Team · Updated 23 July 2026

Auctions are one of the best ways to buy livestock, property, vehicles and equipment in South Africa — often below retail. But if you have never bid before, the process can feel opaque. This guide walks you through buying at an online auction, step by step.

1. Register as a bidder (and complete FICA)

You cannot bid until you are registered. South African auction houses are required to verify bidders, so you will usually be asked to complete FICA — a copy of your ID and a recent proof of address. Some auctions also ask for a refundable deposit to confirm you are a serious bidder.

On BidAll, registering as a bidder is free and takes under a minute. One registration lets you follow auctioneers and bid across the whole network.

2. Do your homework before you bid

Auction lots are typically sold voetstoots (as-is), so inspection matters. Before bidding:

  • Read the lot description and the auction's terms and conditions in full.
  • Attend the viewing day or ask the auctioneer for extra photos, condition reports or documents.
  • Research the market value so you know your ceiling.

3. Understand the true cost

The winning bid — the hammer price — is not the final price. On top you will usually pay a buyer's premium (commonly 6–15%) plus VAT, and sometimes documentation or clearance fees. Always work out the all-in cost before you bid. Our guide to buyer's premium and auction fees breaks the numbers down.

4. Place your bid

Online auctions run in several formats — timed (bid any time until the lot closes), live (real-time against a floor), or sealed. Decide your maximum in advance and stick to it. Many platforms offer auto-bidding, where you set a limit and the system bids on your behalf up to that amount. Remember: a winning bid is a binding contract to buy, and auction purchases do not carry the usual cooling-off rights.

5. Pay and collect

If you win, you will receive an invoice for the hammer price plus premium and fees. Pay within the stated period (usually by EFT or a secure online gateway) and arrange collection or delivery per the terms. Only pay through channels the auctioneer has published — never a number sent by a stranger.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register before I can bid?

Yes. Almost every South African auction house requires you to register as a bidder before an auction and to complete FICA (a copy of your ID and proof of address). On BidAll, registering as a bidder is free and takes under a minute.

What is a buyer's premium?

A buyer's premium is a percentage the auctioneer adds to your winning (hammer) bid, usually 6–15% plus VAT. Always read the auction's terms so you know the premium before you bid — it is part of what you pay.

Can I cancel a winning bid?

Generally no. A winning bid at auction is a binding contract to buy. The usual consumer "cooling-off" rights do not apply to auction purchases, so only bid up to what you are genuinely willing to pay.
