Onsite auctions

The traditional format: bidders gather in person (or at the farm, yard or showroom) and bid against a live auctioneer.

• Strengths: hands-on inspection, atmosphere and momentum, instant settlement, trusted for high-value or hard-to-photograph lots (livestock, machinery).
• Limits: your audience is whoever can travel there on the day — which caps competition and price.

Online auctions

Bidders take part over the internet, either in a timed sale (bid any time until a lot closes) or a live-streamed sale.

• Strengths: a national — even international — audience, convenience, and a searchable catalogue that keeps working as marketing long before the sale.
• Limits: buyers rely on photos and condition reports, so trust, clear terms and good presentation matter more.

Hybrid auctions

A live floor runs while online bidders join in real time. For sellers it combines local presence with national reach; for buyers it means you can compete whether or not you can attend. For many South African auctioneers this is the sweet spot.
