Buying at a Vehicle Auction in South Africa

By The BidAll Team · Updated 26 October 2026

Vehicle auctions can save you a lot on a car, bakkie or truck, but vehicles are sold as they stand. Here is how to buy at a South African vehicle auction without nasty surprises.

Where auction vehicles come from

  • Bank repossessions and finance-house stock.
  • Fleet disposals from companies, rental firms and government departments.
  • Insurance write-offs sold after a claim, marked with a write-off code.
  • Dealer and private consignments.

Know the write-off codes

A Code 3 vehicle has been written off but can be repaired. It must pass inspection and police clearance before it can be registered again. A Code 4 vehicle may only be used for parts or scrap and can never go back on the road. The lot details should state the code. If they don't, ask.

Inspect before you bid

  • Use the viewing day. You usually can't test drive, but you can often start the engine and look underneath.
  • Check the mileage, service book, spare keys and whether the registration papers are available.
  • Look for accident repairs, warning lights and tyre wear, and take someone who knows vehicles if you can.

Know the full cost

On top of your winning bid you normally pay a buyer's premium, VAT where it applies, and admin or documentation fees. You also need a roadworthy certificate and registration in your name before the vehicle is legally yours to drive. Our guide to auction fees explains how these add up.

After you win

  • Pay within the time in the auction rules, often 24 to 48 hours.
  • Collect by the deadline, or storage fees may apply.
  • Arrange transport if the vehicle isn't roadworthy yet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I register a Code 3 vehicle bought at auction?

Yes, once it has been repaired, inspected and cleared by the police. A Code 4 vehicle can never be registered again — it is for parts or scrap only.

Do auction vehicles come with a roadworthy certificate?

Usually not. Budget for a roadworthy and registration in your name on top of the price, plus any repairs needed to pass.
